Breaking the Branded Content Habit is Hard

Every time I open a window to write a new post, I think, “What am I going to write about?” I start going through a deck of mental index cards with branded topics on them.

Even just now as I write this, I am physically trying to stop myself from writing this. I reached for the mouse twice to hit CANCEL.

Why? Because this kind of post isn’t interesting. It won’t attract readers. It is about NOTHING.

I am going to feed the content monster and hit publish.

Will this post drive traffic to my site? Nope.

Will it help sell my books and courses? Nope.

Will I feel better having written this? Yes! Because it is the expression of a thought that has been rattling around in my head for two days now, and it is time for me to be free of it!

Boom. Publish.

Barbara Burgess is a writer which is made apparent by the text in this box and the box above. She is best known for being a multi-genre/multi-writing voice author who throws caution to the wind when describing her writing career - "Oh, I write children's books, holiday romance, and sci-fi. Why? What do you do? Just one thing?" In addition to being a writer of all the things, she is the founder of Pilgrim Fowl Press and a writing facilitator bringing permission to write to the masses via Skillshare and Udemy. The only social media she frequents is Instagram (@hellothisisbarbara). Her desert island movie is Stargate (the original with James Spader), and she has been taking daily mug shots of her morning coffee since before Instagram was even a thing.
